Golf

Oubaai is rated as one of the most challenging courses in South Africa. No wonder it carries the mark as an “Ernie Els” signature course.

The course is long according to coastal standard, 6516 meters from the pro tees. The average golfer gets rewarded for well executed shots, but punished for waywards shots – the rough is difficult to contend with, and if you miss a shot, you will have the bush or fynbos to contend with. At least you have the wonderful environment to console yourself should a mishap occur. The view of the Ocean towards the South, the Outeniqua mountains to the north, and then on the northern side the magnificent Gwaing river to enjoy.

Memorable holes are the par 3 6th hole, which takes you over a gorge, with the Gwaing river on your right. The omnipresence of nature reminds you of your surrounds – the hiking trail descends from the tee box to below. The short 17th provides you with the feeling that you are hitting into the Ocean, but the hole can become a nightmare if you do not take notice of the swirling South Easter.

Finally, coming down the 18th and its narrow fairway, you are mindful of a miscue to the left that could ruin your score on the hole. Consciously you are aware of the members sitting in the clubhouse, watching you progress with either admiration or glee.

Playing golf at Oubaai is truly memorable, the staff is helpful and friendly, and the facilities, particularly the dressing rooms and the club house an experience to behold. Undoubtedly you will be back for more

Other courses

When the golfer stays at Oubaai, he has so many delightful choices to make, George itself has the George Golf Club, one of the most prestigious on the Garden Route. Then there is the Fancourt complex with the Outeniqua Course, the Montagu course,  as well as Links course where the Presidents Cup was hosted a number of years ago

In the surrounding areas we have Pezula and Simola in Knysna, along with the very difficult Pinnacle Point course in Mossel Bay.
